Jörg Ahrnt, Vahid Hakim
Weißfrauen Diakoniekirche
The exhibition "Fault" shows works on paper by Vahid Hakim (Tehran) and Jörg Ahrnt (Frankfurt). For these paintings, Vahid Hakim and Jörg Ahrnt have designed a walk-in dodecagonal space (24 meters in circumference and 3.50 meters in height). The space is created from special construction fences that delimit it from the outside. The room is open towards the top.
The pictures of Vahid Hakim are constituted of countless points. These form geometric structures, which, however, are not regular. The dots are not painted, but burned into the paper point by point. Out of this time-intensive working process, miniatures emerge that seem to consist only of "hard facts" (the paper and its burnt surface), but at the same time unfold a subtle poetry.
The works on paper by Jörg Ahrnt form circular color gradients. The circular movement begins from a point outside the picture. The rhythmizing brushstrokes resemble graphemes that the eye follows, but which cannot be deciphered.
Both artists develop their pictures in an open working process from the smallest elements, from which energy seems to emanate. This requires a delimiting, meditative way of working, with which they refer to Islamic as well as Modern, or Contemporary Art. The installation creates a center with its own boundaries within the church space, which seems like an archaic ship's bow. The lattice structure of the installation changes the view of the paintings. The grids cross the viewer's gaze. They confront image and viewer with heterogeneous forces.
At the same time, the separating grids create an interior and exterior space. However, through the gaps in the grids they allow a view of the other side. By entering the installation and then stepping out, the visitor's perception of the church space, the images and himself changes. He experiences an expansion and dissolution of boundaries and a change of perspective becomes possible.
Due to the political situation, there is currently hardly any official cultural exchange between Iran and Germany. As logical as overall political decisions may be, they are problematic for cultural exchange. Even on the individual level, this is hardly possible anymore; here, too, one can speak of distortions.
